Naima Khatoon has written history at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) by becoming its first female Vice Chancellor in a century.

Her appointment marks a significant departure from tradition, signaling a new era of inclusivity and progress for the prestigious institution.

Naima Khatoon's journey within AMU is a testament to her dedication and commitment to the institution. Starting as a student, she earned a PhD in Psychology and went on to become a lecturer in the Department of Psychology in 1988. Her academic career flourished, and she was promoted to the position of Professor in 2006. In 2014, she was appointed as the Principal at the Women's College, further solidifying her commitment to the institution's ethos of education and empowerment.

The selection process for the Vice Chancellorship at AMU is unique and meticulous. The Executive Council, comprising 27 members, plays a pivotal role in shortlisting candidates for the position. Through a ballot paper voting process, a panel of five individuals is selected from among the applicants. This panel is then deliberated upon by the AMU Court, which consists of esteemed members, including former vice-chancellors and department deans. Following thorough discussions, three candidates are chosen based on their qualifications and merits. The Education Ministry is then presented with these names, from which the President, as the university's Visitor, ultimately appoints the Vice Chancellor. This rigorous process ensures that only the most qualified and deserving candidates are chosen for this prestigious role.

Amidst the nation's democratic enthusiasm, Naima Khatoon's historic appointment as the first female Vice Chancellor of AMU is a beacon of progress. Her appointment, though significant, was not exempt from the democratic process. To ensure compliance with the Model Code of Conduct, the Election Commission sought approval for her appointment. After thorough scrutiny and ensuring no political advantage was sought, the Election Commission gave its endorsement, further validating the transparency and integrity of the appointment process.

As AMU continues to uphold its legacy of academic excellence and social progress, Naima Khatoon's appointment as the first female Vice-Chancellor ushers in a new era. Her tenure heralds a chapter characterized by diversity, meritocracy, and transformative leadership, instilling a sense of pride and hope in the AMU community.
